Brad Crutchfiield recalls: Ricky was a member of the NHS band. Though he started out on clarinet, Ricky switched to bass drum during marching season. He was the originator of a very popular tribal sounding beat that became known as the "Big Rick Breakdown."
Rick was a good friend and have always remembered him fondly. I think a little clarification is called for. I recall having some good times with him after 1976 and into the 1980s. He actually died sometime around 1983.
I visited Ricky's folks on a visit back to NC. His gentle father told me how happy he had been to have recently been married. Driving home, a drunk driver ran into him.
Ricky had a wicked sense of humor and a huge heart, and was very kind to me on several awkward occassions.
